Printed circuit board assembly

Short & simple explanation:

PCB assembly is the process of mounting electronic components onto a printed circuit board (PCB), a key step in electronics manufacturing.

What is PCB assembly?

In PCB assembly, components such as resistors, capacitors, chips, transistors, and other electronic components are precisely placed on the prefabricated printed circuit board. This can be done manually or automatically. After the components have been placed, they are usually fixed in place by soldering to create a stable electrical connection.

The entire process involves several steps.

PCB assembly is a key step in the manufacture of electronic devices and ensures that the circuits function and are reliable.

What assembly methods are there?

There are basically two main methods:

  • SMD assembly: Components are placed directly on the surface of the circuit board and soldered. This is the most common method for modern electronic products, as it enables a high degree of automation and fast production. SMD assembly is usually carried out by machine, but for very small quantities, the components can also be placed by hand by trained personnel.
  • THT assembly: In this method, components with through-hole connections (pins) are used, which are inserted through holes in the circuit board and then soldered. This is particularly common for larger, more robust components. THT assembly is usually done manually.
  • Mixed assembly: In many cases, both THT and SMT components are used on a circuit board to meet specific requirements. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, and the choice depends on factors such as quantity, cost, component size, and complexity.

Where is PCB assembly used?

Assembly is part of almost every electronic product manufacturing process:

  • Computer technology and telecommunications
  • Automotive industry and aviation
  • Medical technology and industrial automation
  • Household appliances and consumer electronics

It enables functional electronic devices of all kinds, from simple sensors to complex control systems.
